Similar to the Pre-track, Research Scholar, Teaching Scholar, or (Research) tracks, the Clinician Scholar track is considered an academic track. This means that a pre-select or search is required to appoint someone to this position.
Senior appointments must be reviewed and approved by CMFA, the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences, the Provost, and the Corporation.
To prevent departments and faculty from doubling their efforts in building dossiers and collecting letters of recommendation, BMFA highly recommends waiting to request a track change to the Clinician Scholar track until the faculty member is going to be promoted to the next senior rank.
The Clinician Scholar Track may be a more appropriate fit for faculty within BioMed Clinical Departments whose expertise and efforts focus significantly on clinical research and leadership, but who may fall between the other academic tracks because they do not have an educational leadership role to qualify them for the teaching scholar track and their research funding is not sufficient to qualify for the research scholar track.
Please favorite and refer to the Track Changes section on our Faculty Actions Processes page for the most up-to-date information regarding this process.

Please submit requests via the BMFA Faculty Actions site.
Please note: Assistant Professor academic tracks are limited to three 3-year terms before they are required to be promoted to Associate Professor or switch to a (Research) or Clinical track. The term clock starts at the time of the original academic appointment. For example, if the faculty member is switching from Assistant Professor, Teaching Scholar to Assistant Professor, Clinician Scholar, their promotion timeline is based on their original academic appointment as a Teaching Scholar. Faculty can request extensions if needed.
Senior Appointments
CMFA review is required. Please follow the CMFA process and dossier guidelines for this request.
Materials Required for Clinical Track to Academic Track
For faculty changing from a Clinical or Clinician Educator track to the Clinician Scholar track, please follow the Pre-select Process instead of submitting a track change request.
Clinical Faculty Tip: To prevent departments and faculty from doubling their efforts in building dossiers and collecting letters of recommendation, BMFA highly recommends waiting to request a track change to the Clinician Scholar track until the faculty member is going to be promoted to the next senior rank.
Senior Faculty Appointments and Track Changes: BMFA must approve the Pre-select Preapproval (step 1) request before CMFA can review any senior promotions, track changes, or appointments to an academic track.
Clinician Scholars, like the other academic track faculty, are eligible for many Work/Life Benefits from Brown University, including, but not limited to, BioMed TAP, Bear Bargains, and School of Professional Studies discounts.
Standards and Criteria for the Clinician Scholar Track are available on our website and outline the requirements for holding a senior appointment in this track. We recommend utilizing the Clinician Scholar Track Self-Assessment appropriate for the rank you are to be next promoted to throughout your terms of service to ensure you maintain your course toward promotion.
Additionally, metrics PDFs can be found on our Standards and Criteria page and alongside the Self-Assessments on our Forms and Documents page.
